Phraya Gold Rum from Thailand. A cane sugar based rum using all Thailand starting materials. Described as earthy aromas, with moss, caramel, kola nut, and a light smokiness. I didn’t find all of that. What I appreciated was that it was smooth and unique. I think what I tasted and made it unique was that it was a smooth vanilla and kola flavor. I liked it better warm and Bill liked it better cold. Rums are generally sweet, but this found a good balance. It’s not as sweet as some more common ones such as Pyrat or Kaniche. Found for $30. At $30 it’s landing between Pyrat at $24 and Ron Zacapa at $36. Kaniche is also $30 so it’s right there. I’d say if you really like sweetness and vanilla get a Kaniche or Pyrat. If you like less sweet and less vanilla get a Zacapa or Phraya.
