Fat Bottom Betty by Drew Estate

The Fat Bottom Betty in the Drew Estates is a great looking dark brown beauty. US Connecticut Wrapper, Nicaragua Binder and Filler. The cigar we reviewed on Episode 67 was the Toro in a 6 x 50. I can’t tell you how much I wanted to try one. I have seen advertising of the Deadwood line from Drew Estates all over the sites I normally visit such as halfwheel.com. There are two bands on the Fat Bottom Betty Toro. There is one close to the head and another smaller on at the foot. Since the foot band needed to be removed to light the cigar, I went to it in a cautious manner. No one wants to start things off with a ripped or cracked wrapper. To my surprise, it moved a round a bit, then just slipped right off the end. All worries about being careful for the removal was quickly alleviated.

At this point for some reason I did a cold draw. Normally I find cold draws completely useless. What is the point if I get flavors off a cold draw since I am going to smoking it with the end lit up? So I may not understand the cold draw much, but for some reason I did one on this little beauty. Surprise! A blast of sugar! I would not have guessed that a cigar with the name of Fat Bottom Betty would have a sugared tip. She is in the Deadwood line. There is no sugar. Or at least that is what I thought anyway. There are those around that really enjoy a sugared tip. While I am not one of them, if you are then you should like the Fat Bottom Betty.

Aside from being a bit disappointed by having a sugared tip, the journey continued. With The Fat Bottom Betty having the Connecticut wrapper I expected it to be smooth. With the Nicaraguan Binder and Wrapper, I was expecting a bit of spicy with some earthy tones. So I toasted the foot and got her lit up.

About an inch into the cigar, all I could really get was the sugared tip. It remained that way for me throughout the cigar. You would think that the sugar was would run out eventually, but this one did not. Those of you that enjoy that kind of thing, more power to you. I am not sure how you manage it. Darrell got some flavors through the sugar bomb, but not me. It was very unfortunate that I was waiting to get ahold of one to try and that is all I got. Oh, well. It did not keep me from smoking it down all the way or from attempting constantly to get some flavors out of it. I expect the Sweet Jane to have a sugar tip, but not her rehabbed sister Fat Bottom Betty.

Now, you might think that this would keep me from wanting to try the rest of the Drew Estates Deadwood line and there you would be wrong. Those ladies need to find their way to my humidor so I can samples each and every one of them.
