On July 13th, 2020, Diageo PLC has announced they are going with a recycled product for their bottles. To be specific the Johnnie Walker bottles. Same whiskey, non-glass bottle. But wait you say, if their bottles are currently made from glass and glass is recyclable, what are they doing?

Well, Diageo has teamed up with venture management company Pilot Lite to create Pulpex Limited. Pulpex Limited is creating bottles made of pulp. That’s right pulp manufacturing comes to liquor world. Glass was not good enough. Enter pulp.

The first bottles are to be available in early 2021 and you will be able to recycle with lighter weight materials. This not only is green in the form of pulp, but since the pulp bottles are do not weight as much as the glass bottle counterparts, it should reduce fuel consumption and if you care about such things, carbon footprint.

Ewan Andrew who is the Chief Sustainability Officer for Diageo PLC tweeted “We’re proud to have created this world first. We are constantly striving to push the boundaries within sustainable packaging and this bottle has the potential to be truly ground-breaking. It feels fitting that we should launch it with Johnnie Walker, a brand that has often led the way in innovation throughout its 200 years existence.”

According to the press release from Diageo, this bottle is being billed as the “ ‘first of its kind’ scalable paper-based bottle designated and developed to be 100% plastic free and expected to be fully recyclable”. We can’t wait to get our hands on one of these to be able to give you a first hand account of the bottle itself.

Even though it does not seems like it in this article we do applaud Diageo for their work on everything they do move to renewable and recyclable manufacturing and packaging. We wish them all the best in the quest they have set themselves on.
