Bill and Darrell have guests Vinnie and Julia on to share the Room 101 Ichiban and 4 different Ports. They talk about what make a port and try to shorten it up quite a bit. It makes me feel like our regulations simple. There’s a little food talk and discussion of bringing ‘I Love Lucy’ back.

Originally from the Douro River Valley in Portugal, port is a sweet dessert wine that is fortified with brandy during the fermentation process.  There are 8 varieties.

  • White
  • Ruby
  • Tawny,
  • Crusted,
  • Late-Bottled Vintage (LBV)
  • Single Quinta,
  • Colheita
  • Vintage

There are two factors that make a Port wine unique.  First that is a sweet red wine.  Second, it has added spirits to stabilize the wine for long term storage.  So unlike a wine, you don’t have to drink it all after opening it.  You can have some, but the cork back on the bottle and more days later with no issues or changes in the flavor.

We had four ports for this show.

Sandman Founders Reserve. This is a 5yr Reserve Ruby that comes in at $16.  This was one of the favorites.

Messias 10yr Tawny.  This came in at about $25

Dow’s Fine Tawny.  This comes in at about $14.

Quinta Das Carvalhas 2015.  This comes in about $20

Thanks Vinny and Julia for joining us on the show.
