There is a little sweetness to the second hand smoke that Darrell thinks smells like pot. I did not get that, but who knows.
The Old Fashioned by itself was good, but Bill did not overly care about what the lemon flavor did to taste of the cigar. But Darrell like the combination.
Nice wrapper, solid smoke. No transition. Wood and leather all the way through.
The Liquor
George Remus Straight Bourbon at 94 Proof and non-chill filtered.
Aroma is sweet with notes of maple and vanilla
Taste has hints of vanilla and a sweet, yet, characteristic rye flavor
Finish smooth, long finish, giving way to the subtle vanilla sweetness.
MSRP $35
This is the low end of the Remus line. Along with this one, they have Remus Repeal Reserve which has a 94 Proof and two 100 Proof offerings. Then the big one, the Remus Volstead Reserve.
After the break Darrell comes back with Old Fashioned mixes. It has got a nice smell, but the initial was a tart taste. “We call this one the Old Fashioned Pucker”, says Bill. But adding in some drops of simple syrup we were able to get it smoothed out and it made a pretty good Old Fashioned.
Basically sweet and vanilla. A little wood. It is smooth for the 94 Proof.
The More
George Remus King of the Bootleggers:
George was born to Frank and Marie Remus in Landsberg, Germany in 1878. Migrated to America in 1882.
At the age of 14 he started working in his un George’s pharmacy, giving him his first exposure to the trade that he would also get into. George started his own pharmacy after earning his pharmacist’s license by purchasing his uncles pharmacy.
George expanded his knowledge of the Illinois College of Law, by earning a law degree, completing the three year course in just 18 months. In 1900, George was admitted to the Illinois Bar. With both the Pharmacy knowledge and law, he starts finding loopholes in the Volstead Act. Also in 1900 George and his wife Lillian had their only child, Romola. Romola would go on to earn fame as an actress as she portrayed Dorothy on-screen in the Wizard of Oz.
In 1909, George defends bootleggers. As arguments for Prohibition begin to mount, and more are arrested for bootlegging and noted the wealth that his clients had generated from their trade.
Insanity Defense. In 1914 George gained national notoriety for his role as a defense attorney in the William Cheney Ellis murder trial. It was at this trial that George would pioneer the virtually unheard of “transitory insanity” defense. A precursor to what would be known as “temporary insanity”. It worked as Ellis was only given a light sentence and George’s creative defense would go on to be an influential part of American Law.
In August of 1920, George moves to Cincinnati due to the its proximity to about 80% of the country’s bonded whiskey. He then began to acquire drug companies and enlisted the help of federal associates in Washington, D.C. that he had worked with as an attorney. These associates would give him access to all of the permits he would need to purchase and withdraw bourbon from the many distilleries he would go on to own.
After creating his own trucking company, George would again send large amounts of bourbon on his own trucks to his own drug companies and have them hijacked along the way. The “stolen” bourbon would then quickly make its way to George’s warehouses on a Cincinnati farm called Death Valley. With armed guards, whiskey runners and a payroll of 3,000 workers, politicians and law enforcement officials, George’s reputation as the King of Bootleggers was solidified.
Cigar Journal
We have our cigar journals for sale. Some improvements that we did on our journals that you will not find in others is an Table of Contents page and staggering the band placement from page to page. The staggered band placement means that the one side will not become thicker than any other. It produces a well balanced approached to glueing or taping the bands in your journal.
Old Fashioned
If you have not tried the Old Grandad 114, it was great as an Old Fashioned. We did not like it straight, but we all loved it in the mix drink.
