The Cigar

Espinosa Comfortably Numb 6 x 50

Nicaraguan filler, Corojo Binder, Ecuadorian Habano Wrapper. MSRP $8.

Very cool band. Very 1970’s like or Austin Powers look. We mostly get Earthy with a little spice as the cigar starts out. It starts out more towards the full range at the beginning, but the towards the first third it smooth’s out. Then we get a Woody flavor with the spice. Retrohale is Pepper, but little to no pepper in the draw. If you like medium to full cigars, give this one a try. The glue on the band did not touch the cigar.

The wrapper looks soo good. Enjoy the oily sheen where the burn meets the wrapper. Very nice.

The Liquor

Kirk & Sweeney Rum 12Yr.

Product of the Dominican Republic. Kirk & Sweeney comes in a 12 Yr ($34), 18 Yr ($44), 23 Yr ($52) & XO ($216).

Aroma: Sweet aroma of honey, hint of vanilla, toasted oak, caramel and dried fruits.

Taste: Nectar quality. Light notes of vanilla and wood.

Finish: Bold, ripe, and sweet vanilla flavors evolve near the end, providing a smooth, long and luxurious finish.

Kirk and Sweeney was a wooden schooner, best known for smuggling rum from the Caribbean to the Northeast during the early years of Prohibition.

Kirk & Sweeney have some recipes on their website for their rum. The Old Fashioned recipe is something that we should probably try at some point.

Specifically Bill got a honeysuckle and honey flavor to the taste. Darrell tasted a honey flavor from it.

The only thing we would ask is that the cork was a little taller. It was a bit difficult to get the cork out.

Micallef Article on Kirk and Sweeney

This is just a few snipets of Micallef’s article. Please visit the link to read the entire article. Joe Micallef’s articles are worth reading.

Kirk and Sweeney is a Caribbean rum produced in the Dominican Republic by J Armando Bermudez & Co., a rum distiller in Santiago de los Caballeros, for California’s 3 Badge Beverage Corp. Bermudez, among the oldest distilleries in the Dominican Republic, dates back to 1852, and is among the largest rum distillers on the island.

Most Dominican rums are based on sugarcane juice rather than on molasses. This is a feature Dominican distillers’ shares with the rhum agricole (rums) produced in the French West Indies.

Kirk and Sweeney has a classic Dominican profile, even though it is based on fermented blackstrap molasses.

In the Dominican Republic, 51% of the blend must correspond to the stated age on the bottle. The other 49% must be a blend whose average age is equivalent to the bottles stated age.

Kirk and Sweeney’s core rum range consists of 12, 18 and 23-year-old expressions. Tasting notes are listed below. Recently it also introduced an XO rum that is aged for a full 25 years and is bottled at a cask strength of 65.5%.

Kirk and Sweeney, Dominican Rum, 12 YO Reserva, 40% ABV, 750 ml, ARP $32

This rum is aged in barrels of American oak. The color is a rich reddish-brown mahogany. On the nose, the rum is sweet, with notes of butterscotch and vanilla and just a slight hint of herbaceousness and pepper. As it opens up, subtler dried fruit notes of banana, melon, mango and apricot emerge, along with some citrus zest and some coffee notes.

During the break, we bring in the Diplomatico Mantuano. So we compared the two and for this specific cigar, we ended up preferring the Kirk and Sweeney.

Bill learns a new phrase: Recency Bias. Bill understands the definition, but does not subscribe to the philosophy. We also learn Primacy Bias.

The Matuano has more flavors, but for this cigar, the smoothness and simple flavors of the Kirk and Sweeney fits the best.

We will be announcing a Lone Elm Distillery Tour which will be a tour for four. We have not decided yet how we were determine the winner, but we are getting started.
